Reno, Nevada. From Verdi to Lockwood 700 volunteers came together on a warm fall morning and helped clean up the river during the 12th annual Truckee River Clean-Up Day on September 26, 2009.
With the help of 700 volunteers, 12 tons of trash, including weeds and other debris were removed from within and along the Truckee River, approximately 2 tons of recycling was collected and 118 storm drains were stenciled to prevent future dumping into the river. Trash was collected at Crystal Peak, Mayberry, Ambrose, Dorostkar, Oxbow, Wingfield, Brodhead, John Champion, Rock, Glendale, Cottonwood and Lockwood parks as well as from within the Truckee River by 25 kayakers.
“What an amazing volunteer effort”, exclaimed Christi Cakiroglu, Executive Director of Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful. “The outpouring of volunteer support shows that the Truckee River is truly an appreciated and valued natural resource to our community.” Residents can do their part in keeping the river clean every day by properly disposing of unwanted items and securing belongs while playing in or near the river.
